Capturing children in their natural expressions and character can result in stunning photographs.
But lets be honest...
Sometimes family photos can bring out a lot of nerves in us all and can have a parent feeling like everything needs to go "just right" and a child not really wanting to take part in any of it (My children and I have been there). Instead, take that pressure off and learn to go with the flow. If you can show them how to take the pressure off by eliminating that within yourself -you'll be surprised. And, it just might flow into your children. And if not, no worries -we will work through it and still get great photos.
And for the record -if one of your kiddos isn't having it -I GET IT. One of my kiddos will never listen to photo directions -so I've learned you just gotta roll with it;)
Leading up to the photoshoot:
It will help if you can involve them in the process long before the day of the photoshoot. You can look at old candid photos together and remind them of how special having those moments are as a family. Ask them if there is any items or moments they think would be special to capture. Is there something significant they think might be good to have in the photo -a favorite book, stuffed animal, or dress up item? Is there a place in your home that they may want to include -them playing in their favorite spot, your son jumping off the couch in his favorite cowboy hat, you braiding your daughters hair with your littlest child playing with blocks with your husband next to you? These unique moments can make for the sweetest memories.
Scheduling:
Opt for a time when they're typically rested and happy, avoiding nap times or mealtimes. If photos will be taken during a mealtime -have them eat early or bring a snack they can have right after.
One last word of encouragement:
Do not worry when hiccups happen. Whether it's in the getting ready, the drive there or leading up to the photoshoot if it's at your home and there is a mess or a spill. Life happens and I'm here to capture it in a way that will showcase the sweetness of it all.
